Antartic Vortex's Relation to Ski Vacation Trip

Most ski vacation destinations in Australia remain covered in thick snow, leaving many skiers every reason to spend time in the slopes and frolic on the ice. Generous snowfall estimated to be 15cm is noticed across South Coast, Snowy Mountains, Hunter as well as tablelands in the south, central and northern parts of the country. Ski resorts get more than 40cm of snow, making every skier extra excited to take over the course.

If you’ve been watching news lately, chances are you have heard Australia is currently going through Antarctic Vortex – a severe weather condition characterized by generous snowfall, freezing wind, and plummeting temperatures. As per reports, Tasmania, Queensland, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne are affected by such weather. Antarctic Vortex has blasted the east coast and has done its worst, delivering what’s been predicted to be coldest icy hit in 15 years.

Alpine regions where most ski resorts are located are expected to benefit from Antarctic Vortex but freezing air and gale-forced winds may cause many ski fanatics to consider rescheduling ski vacations. The weather which could be good for the slopes can be detrimental to skiers. Think about battling bone-chilling temperature, strong wind chill factor and gusts of more than 90 km/hr.

But what really is Antarctic Vortex? Why is it so cold? Antarctic Vortex is a complex low pressure system involving frigid air causing major snowfalls and record-setting cold temperatures. The condition brings in sub-polar air, resulting to freezing temperature and prolonged snowfalls which may either be a boon or bane. It is usually accompanied by damaging winds, typically ranging from 60 to 70 km/hour up to 100 km/hour. Said chilly weather may also be accompanied by heavy rains that can possibly cause flash floods. Other typical signs of this weather condition include wintry blasts and widespread frost.

Antarctic Vortex which is also dubbed thundersnow causes a thick blanket of snow. Perisher, a famous ski vacation destination in Australia, recorded 25 centimeter of snow as a result of said weather situation. A spokesperson from Thredbo revealed they are expecting at least 70 centimeter of snow as a result of such cold front. Resort operators from Perisher and Thredbo as well as other ski destinations across Australia claim the weather is perfect for covering the slopes for skiers and snowboarders.

The cold spell is particularly favorable to ski fields as it brings in huge amount of snow. This guarantees consistent snowfall and fresh powder that most vacationers are looking forward to on their ski trips.
