Ski Vacation | Aspen Colorado | Tours de Sport | 888-754-2167

There are lots of notable and interesting moments in the history of Aspen that you'd surely want to know:

  • The area around Aspen has been inhabited for nearly 8,000 years, and was known by the Ute Indians as 'The Shining Mountains'.
  • Prospectors first discovered the silver lodes in 1879, and the mining town that resulted was called Ute City.
  • The area was renamed to Aspen in 1880 due to the abundance of aspen trees.
  • By 1891, Aspen became the largest silver production area in the country, and by 1893, had 12,000 residents, six newspapers, four schools, three banks, two theaters, an opera house, a hospital...and electricity (one of the first towns in North America to have it!).
  • In 1893, the United States returned to the gold standard, and Aspen died as a silver-mining town, clinging to existence solely as a ranching center.
  • During the 1930s and '40s, skiing was born in the Aspen area, and was enhanced by Army soldiers who came from nearby Camp Hale for recreation. (In 1935, Aspen was scheduled to become one of Colorado’s premiere ski resorts but had to postpone its opening due to the War)
  • Officially opened in 1947, Aspen had the longest ski lift in the world.
  • In 1950, Aspen hosted the first FIS World Alpine Championships in North America, giving Aspen international recognition as a world-class ski area.

8 Useful Tips for Great Spring Skiing on Your Ski Trip

Dread the end of the winter season? Go spring skiing on your next ski trip! Spring skiing will spare you from the dreaded end-of-season blues.

Spring time is also a perfect time to hit the slopes: the weather is more pleasant, the daylight hours are longer, the prices are better, and the crowd is starting to thin.

If you're itching for a few more runs before the snow totally melts, here are a handful of tips to help you make the most of your spring skiing:

1. Start early with a plan

In some places, March and April are two of the best months for skiing. Book a trip to these places early during those months for fun and less crowded days on the slopes.

2. Know the melt-freeze cycle.

As spring time won't guarantee you fresh powder snow of winter season, your best bet would be to get to know the melt-freeze cycle. On sunny days, south and east facing slopes begin to melt early, while the north and west melt in the afternoon.

TIP: Can't figure out the melt-freeze cycle? Wake up early and ski the slopes facing the sun before heading out to higher elevations during the day.

3.Tune your skis

Get your skis tuned-up for spring. Warm weather means wetter snow, which means snow can be difficult and will slow you down. So a good layer of wax will make your skis glide faster and smoother.

4. Go to higher altitudes

High altitude plus colder atmosphere means snow will last longer. Better choose ski trip destinations that offer skiing opportunities at 200 meters above sea level.

5. Always wear sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must when you're spring skiing. The sun's harmful UV rays can still wreak havoc on your skin, even if it's still cold and there's still a lot of snow on the slopes. Snow can reflect up to 80 percent of UV rays, thus increasing exposure. And, the higher the altitude, the more you're exposed to UV rays.

6. Stay hydrated

More sun and longer daylight hours mean temperatures are higher during spring. Thus, drinking plenty of water is a must. If you want to check your hydration level, just look at your urine color. If it's clear, then you're hydrated.

7. Wear your goggles or sunglasses.

Sunglasses and goggles are important to skiing, just like your ski boots. Your eyes are also vulnerable to the harsh UV rays of the bright spring sun. UV radiation has been proven to be one of the major causes of eye problems such as cataracts, cancer of the eye, and sunburn to the retina called photokeratitis.

Before the snow finally melts, embark on a spring ski trip and take advantage of the longer days and warmer temperatures. Don't forget your safety gears and lightweight jackets.

Baker has always been known for its tremendous average annual snowfall, but the record was set during the 1998-1999 season, when it had 28.5 meters (93.50 ft.) of snow. This makes this resort famous for skiers who want to do their runs and turns on thick snow.

2. Alyeska, Alaska

Kirkwood is certainly a perfect place to experience an abundance of fresh snow powder under the Californian sun.

5. Snowbird, Utah

Last, but certainly not the least, is another famous Utah ski resort. Snowbird gets an annual powder of 12.5 meters per season and a record of 17.5 meters (15.4 ft.) in 2011.
