Showing Your Kids the Magic of Wintertime on Your Family Ski Trip
Autumn is just around the corner and what better time to plan for your family ski trip than right now! Family ski excursions are the best time to introduce your tiny tots to the magic of snow and the possibilities they bring.
And if you’re mad about skiing or snowboarding, your trip to the mountains can be the perfect opportunity to get your little ones acquainted with the sport.
So how do you show your kids the magic of winter time (and the fun skiing and snowboarding can bring)? Here are a couple of tips:
1. Introduce snow. You don’t exactly have to head out to the bunny slopes and teach them the basics of skiing on the first day of winter (or the first day of your ski vacation for that matter). Let them have fun on the snow! Try snowball fights, making snow forts, tubing, sledding, ice skating and other fun stuff you and your little one can do during this season.
2. Pique their curiosity. Let your kids watch skiers glide down the slopes at a safer distance. Surely they’ll ask why people would go through all that trouble to just slide down the mountain on a pair of sticks or on a €skateboard with no wheels€. That could be the signal to give your tiny tots the €ski talk€.
3. Sign them up for ski school. Unless you’re a pro, you’re better off signing them up for ski school for two good reasons: (1) They’ll be learning from a pro; (2) Peer pressure, in this case, will work to your advantage in encouraging your kids to embrace the sport.
NOTE: Gauge their interest in skiing or snowboarding first, or else you’ll be spending a fortune on ski lessons they’re not too keen on taking.
4. Take them out shopping. Right before ski school starts, bring your kids with you when you’re shopping for new gears or having your skis tuned before your ski escapade. This could be the best time to introduce different gears they could use on the slopes. Let them try out a couple of goggles or ski boots. They’re more likely to wear them on your trip when they ACTUALLY like how they look and feel on them.
But give them the freedom to build their personal style. If they think lime green goggles look good on them, then by all means, go for it. At least they’ll be much easier to find on the slopes.
Whatever you do though, don’t pressure your little ones into loving the snow. Kids hate being pressured into anything, no matter how fun or interesting it looks. Let them learn to love the sport in their own time. Perhaps they’ll finally come around and agree how fun winter is on next year’s ski trip. Who knows?

A place that's high as heaven! An epic mountain that has everything, from the most sun shines to the most unforgettable times. Sprawling in 4,800 skiable acres, Heavenly is one of North America's largest mountains, California's longest vertical drop and Tahoe's highest summit.
Heavenly / Kirkwood is well known for having one of the highest average snowfalls and a broad selection of advanced skiing terrain. The mountain is unique and that it has 2 mi (3.2 km) ridgeline at the top. This makes Kirkwood popular for cliff drops and cornices. (Source: wikipedia.org)
Between Heavenly and Northstar’s world-class snowmaking systems and Kirkwood’s well-deserved reputation for receiving the region’s most annual snowfall, pass holders can look forward to a great 2014-15 season.

Sugarbush Ski Vacation
Sugarbush is one of the largest ski resorts in New England. It is separated into two different areas: Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen.
In an effort to create a better relationship with the environment around them, the operators of Sugarbush Ski Resort have begun to switch a lot of their snow-making equipment to low-energy nozzles and operate their snow grooming equipment with nothing but bio-diesel. (Source: http://www.theskiingexperts.com)
Sugarbush, located in the Mad River Valley, is a much lesser known and less commercialized ski resort than popular Vermont ski mountains like Stowe or Killington. The resort has lots of runs, suitable for skiers at all levels. Ski school lessons were great and staffs were excellent. Its also not crowded and so you can assure of a very peaceful getaway.

Essential Sun Safety Tips for Your Ski Trip
Sun exposure during cold season can still actually damage your skin. According to Dr. Perry Robins of The Skin Cancer Foundation, most people are unaware that Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun can wreak havoc on your skin during your ski trip as much as on your beach adventures.
Skincancer.org explains that higher altitude means increased sun exposure. UV radiation exposure increases 4 to 5 percent with every 1,000 feet above sea level. Also, snow reflects up to 80 percent of the UV light from the sun, so the same rays often hit your skin twice.
With the ski season ahead of us, it’s important to take extra precautions on the slopes. Follow these sun protection tips:
Use sunscreen with higher SPF
For extended outdoor activities like ski trips, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum sunscreen with higher SPF. According to skincancer.org, you need to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before hitting the slopes. And, be reminded that you still have to apply sunscreen even on cloudy days since up to 80 percent of UV rays can penetrate clouds.
Apply sunscreen to exposed skin
Bring enough bottles of sunscreen for you to protect all the exposed areas. You have to apply one ounce or two tablespoons of sunscreen on your body and at least a teaspoon on your face. Most often, we forget to protect sensitive regions like the lips, ears, area around the eyes, underside of our chin, scalp, and hands. So be sure to have all these regions covered. Wear lip balm with a minimum SPF of 15.
Cover up
Wear a helmet/hat, long sleeves, pants, gloves and ski masks. It’s also important to choose clothes with sun-protective factor. For instance, a sleeve with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) can prevent the penetration of harmful rays to skin.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using clothing made of dark, tightly woven materials€”they absorb UV light better than cotton fabrics in lighter color.
Wear your sunglasses or goggles
Use the kind of sunglasses or goggles that block 100% of UV rays. Also, the ideal sunglasses have wraparound or large frames€”they will protect your eyes, eyelids, and the sensitive skin around your eyes.
Be mindful of the time
Ski early in the morning before 10 AM, or later in the afternoon after 4 PM as UV exposure tends to be higher between these times. And, remember that the longer you stay on the slopes, the higher the risk of your skin getting sundamaged.
Watch out for photo-sensitivity
If you’re taking your medication, some drugs like tetracycline and diuretics can make your skin extra sensitive to sun exposure and increase the risk of sunburn. So before your trip, consult your doctor about this possibility.
You can have all the fun on your ski trip, but be sure to take great care of your skin and protect it against sun damage.
