Showing Your Kids the Magic of Wintertime on Your Family Ski Trip

Autumn is just around the corner and what better time to plan for your family ski trip than right now! Family ski excursions are the best time to introduce your tiny tots to the magic of snow and the possibilities they bring.

And if you’re mad about skiing or snowboarding, your trip to the mountains can be the perfect opportunity to get your little ones acquainted with the sport.

So how do you show your kids the magic of winter time (and the fun skiing and snowboarding can bring)? Here are a couple of tips:

1. Introduce snow. You don’t exactly have to head out to the bunny slopes and teach them the basics of skiing on the first day of winter (or the first day of your ski vacation for that matter). Let them have fun on the snow! Try snowball fights, making snow forts, tubing, sledding, ice skating and other fun stuff you and your little one can do during this season.

2. Pique their curiosity. Let your kids watch skiers glide down the slopes at a safer distance. Surely they’ll ask why people would go through all that trouble to just slide down the mountain on a pair of sticks or on a €skateboard with no wheels€. That could be the signal to give your tiny tots the €ski talk€.

3. Sign them up for ski school. Unless you’re a pro, you’re better off signing them up for ski school for two good reasons: (1) They’ll be learning from a pro; (2) Peer pressure, in this case, will work to your advantage in encouraging your kids to embrace the sport.

NOTE: Gauge their interest in skiing or snowboarding first, or else you’ll be spending a fortune on ski lessons they’re not too keen on taking.

4. Take them out shopping. Right before ski school starts, bring your kids with you when you’re shopping for new gears or having your skis tuned before your ski escapade. This could be the best time to introduce different gears they could use on the slopes. Let them try out a couple of goggles or ski boots. They’re more likely to wear them on your trip when they ACTUALLY like how they look and feel on them.

But give them the freedom to build their personal style. If they think lime green goggles look good on them, then by all means, go for it. At least they’ll be much easier to find on the slopes.

Whatever you do though, don’t pressure your little ones into loving the snow. Kids hate being pressured into anything, no matter how fun or interesting it looks. Let them learn to love the sport in their own time. Perhaps they’ll finally come around and agree how fun winter is on next year’s ski trip. Who knows?
